Motivation to Move: Why Life Changes Never Wait for the Market

By Jessica Berchtold
Motivation to Move

If you have been telling yourself you will wait to move, you are not alone. In North County and across the country, a lot of people are sitting with the same feeling right now – hoping rates come down, prices soften, or the market shifts in their favor. That plan makes sense on paper. But here is what some are starting to realize: waiting does not usually change the motivation to move that started this whole conversation in the first place.

Your family still needs more room. Your empty nest still feels too quiet. Your parents need you closer. You just got married, or divorced. Your vision of retirement has you somewhere else entirely. Life does not pause while you wait for a better rate. And eventually, the pressure of staying in a home that no longer fits your life starts to outweigh the uncertainty of moving.

That is why some people are still deciding to move right now, even in today’s market. Not because conditions are perfect. But because the life changes behind their motivation to move never really went away. And maybe that is exactly where you are too.

The Real Motivation To Move

Data from the National Association of Realtors shows 1 in 5 buyers last year said they felt like they had to purchase a home at that time, no matter the market. That is an important reminder. The dollars and cents of your move have to make sense – but big life changes happen whether mortgage rates and home prices are high, low, or somewhere in between.

Motivation to Move

And those big life events happen more than most people realize. According to NAR, roughly 22.5 million people experience major life changes in a typical two-year span. These are exactly the kinds of things that change how much space you need, where you want to live, or what kind of lifestyle makes sense for where you are now.

As Chen Zhao, Head of Economics Research at Redfin, put it: “Life doesn’t stand still – people get new jobs, grow their families, downsize after retirement, or simply want to live in a different neighborhood.” That is what makes waiting so hard. Every month you spend hoping the market changes is another month living in a home that no longer works for your life. That feeling of being stuck usually does not go away on its own. If you have been sitting with the question of whether to stay or sell, understanding your own motivation to move is often the clearest place to start.

There May Be More Opportunity Than You Think

Affordability is still a challenge – but there may be more room to work with than you expect right now. The number of homes for sale has been growing for four straight years, which means more options to choose from and, in some markets, more room to negotiate than buyers have had in years. As we have covered in detail, housing inventory in 2026 has reached its highest point since 2020 – and that changes the conversation for both buyers and sellers.

Motivation to Move

That does not mean moving is suddenly easy. But it does mean some people are finding ways to make it work. So if you have been putting plans on hold, the question worth asking is not just “what is the market doing?” It is also: “Can I keep living where I am right now and make it work?” If the answer to that second question is no, it may be worth having a conversation. As we laid out for summer buyers and sellers, a summer move may still be more possible than you think.

Bottom Line

Life changes. Families grow. Kids move out. Careers evolve. And eventually, the home you are in stops fitting the life you are actually living. When your motivation to move has been building for months – or even years – that feeling is worth paying attention to.

If that has been weighing on you lately, whether you are thinking about buying or selling in North County, let’s connect and talk through what your options could realistically look like today. Life cannot always wait for perfect market conditions. Maybe you do not have to either.
